In this lesson, I will cover some uses of the Imperfect subjunctive in Spanish. If you know the Subjunctive, you know that you have to use it with objectives. A subject does an action for a target of another subject. So, we always use the Subjunctive when we use these phrases:

Para que (for/in order to)
Con el objeto de que (in order to)
A fin de que (in order to)

For example:

Los políticos hacen promesas para ganar elecciones. (Politicians make promises to win elections.)
Los políticos hacen promesas para que la gente los vote. (Politicians make promises so the people vote for them.)

So, when the verb before para que is in the Present Indicative, the verb after para que will be in the Present Subjunctive.
But, when the verb before the connector (para que) is in Past, the verb after the connector will be in Imperfect Subjunctive.

Josefina tiró dinero al mar para que la gente supiera que a ella no le interesa el dinero. (Josephine threw money into the sea to let people know that she is not interested in money.)

El maestro escribió una nota a los padres, a fin de que supieran lo que estaba pasando en la escuela. (The teacher wrote a note to parents so that they knew what was happening at school.)

Natalia y Mario hicieron una boda con el objeto de que sus amigos les hicieran regalos. (Natalia and Mario had a wedding so that his friends would give them gifts.)

Sometimes, an objective can be expressed like a desire; and remember that it needs Subjunctive too:

Los padres de Gabriel dejaron de darle dinero porque querían que él buscara un trabajo. (Gabriel’s parents stopped giving him money because they wanted him to get a job.)

María José le dijo la verdad a Pedro porque esperaba que él la entendiera. (María José told the truth to Peter because she expected that he would understand.)

Other use of the Subjunctive is with orders from a subject to another subject. When the principal verb is in the Present Indicative, we usethe Present Subjunctive, but when it is in Past, we need to use Imperfect Subjunctive.

Te pido (I ask you)
Te ruego (I beg you)
Te suplico (I beg you)
Te ordeno (I order you)

Te pido que limpies la casa, porque van a venir mis padres. (I ask you to clean the house because my parents are coming.)
Te pedí que limpiaras la casa porque iban a venir mis padres, finalmente tuve que hacerlo yo. (I asked you to clean the house because my parents were coming; in the end I had to do it.)

Te ruego que te portes bien, porque si no tendré que enviarte a la dirección. (I beg you to behave well, because if not I’ll have to send to the principal.)
Te rogué que te portaras bien, y no lo hiciste, ahora tendrás que ir a hablar con el director. (I begged you to behave yourself, and you did not, now you’ll have to go talk to the director.)

This article is about orthography in the Spanish language or writing in Spanish with the correct letters and spelling. All words have an accent, meaning you use more force in the pronunciation of one of the syllables, but some of them have Tilde, which is a written accent in one of the syllables. We will learn when it is necessary to put Tilde (written accents) in the words.

We are going to make a classification of the words according to where they have the greatest force in pronunciation.

The words called AGUDAS, are the words that you pronounce with force in the last syllable. For example:

Camión (truck)
Andar (to ride)
Valor (value)
Oración (sentence)
Francés (French)
Salí (I went out)

Those words have a Tilde when they end in N,S or a vowel.

The words called GRAVES, are the words that you pronounce with force in the penultimate syllable.

For Example:

Lápiz (pencil)
Mapa (Map)
Moneda (Coin)
Difícil (Difficult)

Those words have a Tilde when they don’t end in N,S or Vocal.

The words called ESDRÚJULAS are the words that you pronounce with force in the third to last syllable.

For Example:

Esdrújula
Brújula (Compass)
Díselo (Tell it to him)
Crédito (Credit)

Those words always have a Tilde.

The words called SOBREESDRÚJULAS are the words that you pronounce with force in the fourth to last syllable. For example:

Cuéntamelo (Tell me it)
Fácilmente (Easily)
Difícilmente (Difficulty)
Olvídatelo (Forget about it)

Those words always have a Tilde.

The Monosyllables don’t have a Tilde, but many of them have a Tilde to differentiate between the other words with a different meaning.

Sí (Yes) Si (If)
Té (Tea) Te (Reflexive or IO Pronoun)
Más (More) Mas (But)
Tú (You) Tu (Your)
Él (He) El (Male Article)
Sé (I know) Se (Pronoun)
Mí (I after prepositions: Todo es para mí/Se ríen de mí) Mi (My)

The words used for questions, doubts or to demonstrate admiration always have a Tilde.

¿Cuál es tu nombre? (What is your name?)
¿Quién es tu padre? (Who is your father?)
No sé en qué habitación duermo yo. (I don’t know in which room I should sleep.)
¡Cuánto tardan para traer la cuenta! (How long it takes to bring the bill!)

But we use these words without accents when they are Relatives.

La casa donde crecí era maravillosa. (The house where I grew up was wonderful.)
Perdieron cuanto habían ganado. (They lost what they had won.)
Quien te haya dicho eso es un maleducado. (Whoever told you that is rude.)

Determinants and demonstrative pronouns:

The pronouns éste, ésta, ése, ésa, aquél and aquélla, and their plural forms have accents to differentiate the determinants equivalent.

Ésta es mi casa. (This is my house.)
Aquél es mi primo Raúl. (That man over there is my cousin Raúl.)

The Determinants este, esta, ese, esa, aquel and aquella and their plural forms, never have a Tilde.

Ese auto fue robado. (That car was stolen.)

Esto, Eso and Aquello never have a Tilde because they are always Pronouns and it is impossible to confuse them.

Knowing Spanish’s Conditional Simple is very useful. Spanish’s Conditional Simple is also easy to conjugate if you know the Indicative Mood. Although many grammarians will argue that the conditional is not a tense, in this lesson I will not get involved in that debate. I simply cover the uses of the Spanish’s Conditional Simple and how to conjugate it.

In most tenses we have to change the ending of the Infinitive Verb to another ending, for example, ComER in present tense is Yo como, tú comes, él come, nosotros comemos, ellos comen. But in Conditional, we don’t change the ending, but rather add an additional ending. It´s the same for all verbs ending in AR-ER or IR.

For example:

Dormir
Yo Dormiría
Tú Dormirías
Ud./él/ella Dormiría
Nosotros-as Dormiríamos
Uds./ellos-as Dormirían
IRREGULARS
Tener: Tendr (Tendría, tendrías, tendría, tendríamos, tendrían)
Poder: Podr
Poner: Pondr
Saber: Sabr
Querer: Querr
Haber: Habr
Hacer: Har
Decir: Dir
Venir: Vendr
Caber: Cabr

USES:
One of the ways we use the Conditional tense is when we want to speak more polite. For example, we can use the verb “Poder”, in the conditional tense followed by an unconjugated verb to simulate saying “could you….verb.”

¿Podría traernos una copa más? (Could you bring us another glass?)

We can also just use the conditional tense just using the verb and forget using Poder. For example:
¿Traería una copa más, por favor? (Would you bring another glass, please?)

Another example with Poder:
Tengo frío, ¿Podrías cerrar la ventana, por favor? (I´m cold. Could you close the window, please?

Without Poder:
Tengo frío, ¿Cerrarías la ventana? (I´m cold. Would you close he window?)

Another use for conditional is when we speak about difficult wishes, something impossible for some reason in the moment when we are speaking.

For example:
Comería un pollo con salsa Tabasco, pero solo tengo pastas y arroz en la casa. (I would eat chicken with Tabasco sauce, but I have only pasta and rice in the house.)
Me gustaría ir al Sur, pero este año no tengo dinero. (I would like to go to the South, but I don´t have money this year).

Conditional is also used to hypothesize. For example:

¿Participarías de un Reality Show? (Would you participate in a Reality Show?) Sí, Participaría (Yes, I would participate.)
¿Cómo sería tu propio programa de televisión? (What would be your own TV Program?) Sería un programa de preguntas y respuestas y habría muchos premios. (It would be a question and answer program and have many awards.)

Also, we use Conditional to give advice:

Let’s say a person has a problem with her teenage daughter, and her friends are given her recommendations:

Podrías intentar conocer a sus amigos. (You could try to meet her friends.)
Deberías prohibirle las salidas. (You should ban her from going out at night.)
Tendrías que obligarla a estudiar. (You would have to force her to study.)
Yo que Tú, hablaría con ella. (If I were you, I would speak with her.)
Yo, en tu lugar, organizaría salidas de madre e hija. (If I were in your place, I would organize mother-daughter outings.)
Yo consultaría con un psicólogo. (I would consult a Psychologist.)

In this Spanish grammar lesson, we will cover the use of Reported Speech Or Indirect Speech In Spanish. Indirect Speech is an important and necessary way to say what another person said. With that in mind, we are going to use the third person. Let’s see an example:

“No tengo tiempo para descansar.” (I don’t have time to rest.) (Direct Speech)
Él dice que no tiene tiempo para descansar. (He says he doesn’t have time to rest.) (Indirect Speech)

As you can see, we have to change the verb to third person. Also we should change the Indirect Object if there is one in the phrase: Me gusta el rock/ Dice que le gusta el rock. (I like rock / He says he likes the rock.).

n this Spanish grammar lesson, we are going to take a look at pronouns in Spanish; a subject that usually is very difficult for students. We are going to start with the Direct Object and then we are going to learn the Indirect Object and replace both of them in a phrase. The Direct Object pronouns are the “what” in a sentence and they can be an object or a person.

The Pronouns are:

Me (A mí)
Te (A ti/a Vos)
Lo (Male and Singular Object or A Ud./Él)
La (Female and Singular Object or A Ud./Ella)
Nos (A Nosotros-as)
Los ( Male and Plural Object or A Ustedes/Ellos)
Las ( Female and Plural Object or A Ustedes/Ellas)
The principal function of the D.O is it not repeat. For example:
¿Cómo prefieres la carne? (How do you prefer your meat?)
LA prefiero jugosa. (I prefer it rare.)
¿Compraste tu pantalón en el shopping mall? (Did you buy you pants in a shopping mall?)
No, LO compré en una tienda cerca de mi casa. (No, I bought them in a store by my house.)
¿Has visto a Victor hoy? (Have you seen Victor today?)
No, no LO he visto. (No, I haven’t seen him.)

The Indirect Object pronouns are the “to Whom” in a sentence and they can be an object or a person. The Pronouns are:

Me (A mí)
Te (A ti/a Vos)
Le (A Ud./Él/Ella)
Nos (A Nosotros-as)
Les (A Ustedes/Ellos/Ellas)
Compré una camisa para Marta. (I bought a shirt for Marta.)
LE compré una camisa. (I bought her a shirt.)
Preparo la cena para mí. (I made dinner for me.)
ME preparo la cena. (I prepared dinner for myself.)

It is common when the Indirect Object is in third person to repeat it.

Le dí las llaves a Lorenzo. (I gave the keys to Lorenzo.)
When we want to replace both Objects, we have to put first the Indirect Object followed by the Direct Object and finally the verb conjugated.
Preparé este café para tí. (I prepared this coffee for you.)
TE LO Preparé. (I prepared it for you.)
The pronouns always go before the verb with exception of it is in gerund or the infinitive. If so, we can put its before the structure or at the end of the verb, making it one word.
Voy a preparer café para tí. (I am going to prepare coffee for you.)
Te Lo voy a preparar (I am going to prepare it for you.)
Voy a preparártelo. (I am going to prepare it for you.)
Estoy haciendo el café para tí. (I am making coffee for you.)
Te lo estoy haciendo. (I am making it for you.)
Estoy haciéndotelo. (I am making it for you).

What happens with Reflexive Verbs? In this case you won´t have the Indirect Object, you can only have Direct Object. In this case you should put first the Reflexive Pronoun.

Me estoy cepillando el pelo. (I am brushing my hair.)
Estoy cepillándomelo. (I am brushing it.)
Me lo estoy cepillando. (I am brushing it.)

Todos los días me lavo los dientes. (Everyday I clean my teeth.)
Todos los días me los lavo. (Everyday I clean them.)
With verbs with Indirect Object like GUSTAR we don´t use Direct Object.
Remember that the object in the phrase is the subject of the sentence.
Me gustan las manzanas. (I like apples.)
NEVER: Me las gustan.

Let’s take a look how to use the subjunctive in Spanish with preferences and emotions. In this instance, we convey a thought or emotion or preference based on an action performed by another person or thing.

For example, let’s imagine a conversation between a couple that is arguing:

Melina: Me molesta que pongas las toallas sobre la cama. (It bothers me that you put the towels on the bed.)

Roberto: Pues a mí me irrita que siempre estés quejándote de estas pequeñas cosas.( It irritates me that you’re always complaining about these little things)
M: Es que me fastidia que las sábanas tengan olor a humedad y además me enoja que no colabores con las cosas de la casa; yo trabajo igual que tú. Por ejemplo hoy prefiero que vayas a buscar a los niños tú a la escuela. (It bothers me that the sheets are musty and it angers me that you don’t help out with the things around the house, I work just like you. For example, today I prefer that you go to find children to school.)

R: No me molesta ir, y hasta me pone contento que me lo pidas, pero no de esta manera. (I do not mind going, and even makes me happy you ask me, but not in this way). Me da bronca que digas que no colaboro cuando sabes que no es verdad. (It hurts me that you say I don’t collaborate when you know that’s not true.)

M: Lo siento, pero tengo que hacer una gran cena porque nuestros padres vienen esta noche a casa. Me encanta que ellos vengan a mi casa y me gusta tener todo listo para ellos. (Sorry, but I have to make a big dinner because our parents come home tonight. I love that they come to my house and I like to have everything ready for them.)

R: Ok, me parece bien que te ocupes de la cena, yo me ocuparé de los chicos y de ordenar la casa.( Ok, That sounds good that you take care of dinner, I’ll take care of the kids and put the house in order.)

Pay attention because when the person who expresses the emotion and who does the action are coincident, we don’t have to use Subjunctive but rather the Infinitive. For example:

No me molesta ir (It doesn’t bother me to go.)
Me gusta tener todo listo para ellos (I like to have everything ready for them.)

So the break down is as follows:

Me gusta + Infinitive

Or…

Me gusta que + Subjunctive

Today we are going to learn about how to use the passive voice in Spanish, which is used normally in literature and newspaper articles. In daily life the Passive Voice has been replaced by what we call “la pasiva refleja” (the passive reflecting) which we will take a look at also in this lesson.

For the Passive Voice we always use the verb SER in the tense that the verb is in, in the original sentence plus the past participle. Also the Indirect Object has to pass as the Subject. For example:

Original or Active Voice: Los estudiantes hacen los ejercicios en clase. (The students do the exercises in the class)

P.V: Los ejercicios son hechos por los estudiantes en clase. (The exercises are done by the students in the class)

Original: Los arquitectos franceses construyeron las casas más antiguas de esta ciudad. (French architects built the oldest houses in this city)

P.V: Las casas más antiguas de esta ciudad fueron construidas por los arquitectos franceses. (The oldest houses in this city were built by French architects)

Note: The past participle in Passive Voice, can change in female, male, singular or plural.
More examples:
Original or Active Voice: Cristóbal Colón descubrió América. (Christopher Columbus discovered América.)

P.V: América fue descubierta por Cristóbal Colón. (America was discovered by Christopher Columbus.)

Original or Active Voice: El presidente firmará las leyes el próximo martes. (The President will sign the legislation next Tuesday.)

P.V: Las leyes serán firmadas por el presidente el próximo martes. (Laws will be signed by the president next Tuesday.)

But the Passive Voice in daily life has progressively been replaced by “La Pasiva Refleja” or “Passive with SE”.

It is a derivation of the Passive Voice. For example: La casa es vendida. (The house is sold)

We are going to replace it with”Se” and the verb will be conjugated in singular or plural according to the subject.

Se vende la casa. (The house is sold)

Las bicicletas son alquiladas. (The bicycles are rented)

Se alquilan bicicletas. (The bicycles are rented)

La propuesta de los sindicatos fue aceptada. (The proposal from the unions was accepted)

Se aceptó la propuesta de los sindicatos. (The proposal from the unions was accepted)

You shouldn´t confuse it with the impersonal “SE”, because it always goes with the verb when singular and it doesn’t have a subject. For example:

Se busca a las víctimas del accidente aéreo.

This “a” before the noun indicates that it is Impersonal and doesn’t need to relate with the verb

In this lesson we are going to learn how to make comparisons in Spanish. To understand how to make comparisons in Spanish, it is important to understand that making comparisons about adjectives, nouns, or verbs all have some differences. Let’s take a look.

Comparisons of Adjectives
Roberto es más alto que Martín. Más + Adjective + Que (Roberto is taller than Martín)

Martín es menos alto que Roberto. Menos + Adjective + Que (Martín is less tall than Roberto)
Sergio es tan alto como Roberto. Tan + Adjective + Como (Sergio is as tall as Roberto)
If I said that Roberto is not as tall as Sergio, Sergio would obviously be taller than Roberto.

Comparisons of Nouns
En Londres hay más habitantes que en París. (In London there are more people than in París)
En San Francisco hay menos habitantes que en Chicago. (In San Francisco there are less people than in Chicago).

The difference appears when we make a quality comparison, because we have to use Tanto/a/s according the noun.

En Berlín hay tanto turismo como en Amsterdam. (In Berlín there is as much tourism as in Amesterdam)

En San Francisco hay tantos bares como en Chicago. (In San Francisco there are as many bars as in Chicago).
En Nueva York hay tanta polución como en Los Ángeles. (In New York there is as much pollution as in Los Angeles)
En Argentina hay tantas rutas como en México. (In Argentina there are as many routes as in México)

Comparisons of Verbs
Enriqueta come más que Laura. (Enriqueta eats more than Laura)
Laura come menos que Enriqueta. (Laura eats less than Enriqueta)
Camila come tanto como su novio. (Camila eats as much as her boyfriend)

We are going to practice doing a comparison between 2 imaginary cities: Medano and Ruibal.

(Medano is a city noisier than Ruibal. In Ruibal there are fewer clubs and bars than on Medano.)

Ruibal is a city where there are more homes than in Medano. The people in Ruibal enjoy the morning more than the people in Medan, because people go out less in Ruibal at night. In Ruibal there are as many young people as in Medano, because young people go to Medano to enjoy the nightlife. Also in Medano there are more universities than in Ruibal. Living in Medano is as expensive as living in Ruibal, because both cities have high demand for rentals. However, the lifestyle of Ruibal is not as expensive as the Medano lifestyle, because the people don’t need to spend that much, they live a healthy life and are more friendly than the people from Medano.)

This lesson will be useful if you have to rent, buy or just describe a place (house, apartment, etc). You should remember 3 verbs: Estar/Ser/Tener and some possessive pronouns. First, you should know that in Spanish we divide places into “ambientes” (environments). “Ambientes” are considered the living room and bedrooms. So, if a house has one living room, 2 bedrooms, one a kitchen and 2 bathrooms, this house has 3 ambientes. A place with only one ambiente is called a monoambiente.

We categorize different types of properties into departamentos (apartments), pisos (flats) and casas (houses).

Una propiedad puede SER (A property can be…)
Moderna (Modern)
Clásica/Antigua (Classical/old)
Espaciosa (Spacious)
Luminosa (Light)
Oscura (Dark)
Cálida (Warm)
Fría (Cold)
Cara/No muy cara (Expensive/Not very expensive)
Barata (Cheap)

Una propiedad puede ESTAR (A property can be…)
Amueblada (furnished)
Sin amueblar (unfurnished).
Bien Comunicada (Well connected)
Cerca de…(Close/near to something)
Lejos del centro (away from the center)
En la ciudad (In the city)
En las afueras (In the suburbs)
En una zona tranquila/ruidosa/silenciosa (In a calm / loud / quiet zone)

Una propiedad puede TENER (A property can to have…)
Patio (Patio)
Balcón (Balcony)
Baño/s (Bathroom)
Cocina individual o compartida (Individual kitchen or a part of another room, for example, connected to the living room)
Garaje (Garage)
Piscina (Swimming pool)

¿A dónde da tu casa? (Where is your house faced?) *Please note this is a non-literal translation
Da a la calle (It faces the street)
Da al contrafrente (It faces a wall from another building)
Da al mar (It faces the sea)

Remember that you can use possessive pronouns to make conversations about places.
Mío/a/s (Mine)
Tuyo/a/s (Your’s)
Suyo/a/s (Their’s)
Nuestro/a/s (Our’s)
Suyo/a/s (Their’s)

In order to not repeat the same word twice, we can use an article (female, male, singular or plural) according to what we are speaking about, and the possessive pronoun.
For example:

Mi casa es céntrica. (My house is centrally located)
La mía está en las afueras. (Mine is in the suburbs.)
Nuestro departamento es cálido, pero el suyo es frío. (Our department is warm, but his is cold.)
Mi casa tiene piscina, ¿y la tuya? (My house has a pool, what about yours?)

To express the arrangement of furniture in the house, you can use:

Debajo (de) (under)
Encima (de) (Above)
Detrás (de) (behind)
Delante (de) (in front of)
Entre (Between)
A la derecha (de) (To the right)
A la izquierda (de) (To the left)
Al lado (de) (Next to)
En el centro (de) (To the center)

Describing a home is a common thing to do in any language, so hopefully this lesson provides you with some great tools to use. Whether you are renting an apartment in a Spanish speaking country, describing your apartment to your Spanish speaking friend, knowing the right ways to speak about homes will take you a long way.

In this online Spanish lesson, you will learn how to express conditions in Spanish. Like in English, we have different ways to express a condition in Spanish depending on the idea and the time of that idea. This is why we have 3 different conditional structures.

Structure number 1 is called “Conditional Real”, what is used always with the Indicative, but in the second part you can use the Imperative.

Si + Present + Present/Future/Imperative
Si llueve, el césped se moja. (If it rains, the grass gets wet)
Si llueve, no saldré a la calle. (If it rains, I won´t to go into the street)
Si llueve, vayan a la fiesta con el auto. (If it rains, go to the party with the car)
Structure number 2 (Second Conditional) is used with Imperfect Subjunctive and Conditional.
Si + Imperfect Subjunctive + Conditional

Firstly, we can use it when we want to put ourselves in the place of another person:

Si yo fuera tú, trabajaría menos horas y disfrutaría más de mis hijos. (If I were you, I would work fewer hours and I would enjoy my children more)

Si yo fuera Lionel Messi, jugaría bien al fútbol y tendría mucho dinero. (If I were Lionel Messi, I would play soccer well and I would have a lot of money)

Secondly, it is used to pose hypothetical situations in a not real present:

Si estas paredes hablaran, tendrían muchas cosas para contar. (If these walls could talk, they would have many things to say.)

Si todos saltáramos al mismo tiempo, del otro lado del mundo se despertarían. (If all of us would jump at the same time, the people on the other side of the world would wake up)

Structure number 3 is called ” Conditional Impossible”. We use it when we want to change something in the past with the objective of showing how it could have been different. In this structure we use Pluperfect Subjunctive and Conditional Composite.

Si + Pluperfect Subjunctive + Conditional Composite/ Pluperfect Subjunctive

Si no hubiera bajado del auto para tomar fotos de los leones, ellos no habrían querido atacarme. (If I had not got down from the car to take pictures of the lions, they would not have wanted to attack me)

Si no hubiera tomado café mientras trabajaba con la computadora, no habría volcado el café en el teclado. (If I had not had coffee while working on the computer, I wouldn’t of spilled coffee on the keyboard.)

You can use Conditional Simple to talk about what would have been in the present if you would/wouldn’t of done something in the past.

Si no hubiera tomado café mientras trabajaba con la computadora, la computadora no estaría rota ahora. (If I had not had coffee while working on the computer, the computer would not be broken now)
