SE PUEDE
Sometimes someone wants to know what they can do in a place or what they can not do there. Many times Spanish students translate it like: ¿Es posible comer en clase? o ¿puedes comer en clase? But a correct translation of this would be: ¿Se puede…..?. In this case SE is impersonal. In English, we would probably say something like: “can you eat in class?” But we really aren’t asking if “you” can eat in class, we are asking if “in general”, can a person, whatever person, eat in class. This is where “se puede” comes into use in Spanish.
Some examples:
¿Qué no se puede hacer en una biblioteca?
No se puede hablar por teléfono celular.
No se puede hablar en voz alta.
No se puede llevar comidas o bebidas.
¿Dónde no se puede fumar?
No se puede fumar en una estación de gasolina.
No se puede fumar en un hospital.
No se puede fumar en edificios públicos.
¿Se puede sacar fotos en el zoológico?
Sí, se puede sacar fotos.

We often translate it to “can one,” and that helps many students to understand the conjugation as well as the meaning – sounds a little more formal to native English speakers, but helps to understand the concept.
