In Spanish there exist possessives of two types: type 1 and type 2.

  • In the Type 1 we have the following pronouns:

Mi/s (Yo)

Tu /s (tú y vos)

Su/s (Usted, él y ella)

Nuestro/a/s (Nosotros y nosotras, note: just in this case we have differences between female and male)

Su/s (Ustedes, ellos y ellas)

We use this type always next to the noun. And we have to remember to use singular or plural according to the noun.

Ej: Ellos son mis amigos.

Tu casa es muy linda.

¿Este es su libro?

  • In the type 2 we have female and male for all of these. This condition is according to the noun not the person.

Mío/Mía/s (Yo/ de mí)

Tuyo/a/s (Tú y vos/ de tí, de vos)

Suyo/a/s (Ud., él y ella/ de Usted, de él, de ella)

Nuestro/a/s (Nosotros y nosotras/ de nosotros, de nosotras)

Suyo/a/s (Ustedes, ellos y ellas/ de ustedes, de ellos, de ellas)

We use this type to ask or answer about possessions.

EJ:

- ¿De quién es este lápiz?

-Es mío.

-¿Son tuyos estos libros?

-No, son de Juan.

-¿Dónde está juan?

-Juan salió, fue al kiosco.

-¿Es suya esta mochila?

-No, no es suya, es mía.

  1. In type 1 there is this example: ¿Este es su libro?
And in Type 2 there is this example: ¿Es suya esta mochila?
Beside the objects having different genders. I can’t see why one is a Type 1 and the other is a Type 2. Could you expand on this. Fyi, I am at beginner level Spanish.

  2. In the type 1 you have to use the possesive before the noun, type 2 is for when you dont use the possesive followed by the noun.
    Regars,
