PART 1: SER

The translation for the verb TO BE in Spanish has to different words: SER or ESTAR. We are going to study the difference between SER & ESTAR in 2 parts. Today we going to start with the uses of SER.

1) We use SER with names, to introduce.

Ej: Yo soy Anna, ella es Julia y él es Enrique.

2) We use SER in reference to a Profession or activity.

Ej: Yo soy Profesora de español. mis padres son arquitectos, mi hermano menor todavía es estudiante y el mayor es jugador de fútbol.

3) We use SER to speak about origin or nationality.

Ej: Shakira es colombiana, ella es de Baranquilla.

4) We use SER with the time, it is always plural, with exception of the 1.

EJ: ¿Qué hora es?

Son las dos y media.

5) We use SER with days.

Ej: Hoy es Lunes. Mañana es martes 29 de Junio.

6) We use SER with colors and materials.

Ej: La mesa es marrón (Brown). La mesa es de madera (Wood)

7) We use SER with relationships.

EJ: Andrés es mi hermano. Analía es la esposa de Andrés (Andrés´s wife)

8 ) We use SER with permanent characteristics.

EJ: Juan es alto, flaco y muy simpático. Tiene buenas notas porque es muy inteligente. Es muy divertido por eso es mi amigo.
